 2022 Preview 


       Central completed the 2021 season with a 9-3 record. Last year Central captured the region four title and a number one seed in the Class 5A playoffs. They finished region play with a 5-1 record. Central reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Faith Academy by a score of 40-33.

      

       Central is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only ten seasons. They have managed a record of 96-31 over the past ten years.

       Over the past 10 seasons, Central has gone a combined 96-31. Their 76.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 5A and 12th in the AHSAA.




       The Volunteers are led by head coach Danny Horn who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 45-10 over the past four seasons at Central. Under his direction the Volunteers have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Horn. Coach Horn has won two state championships at Central, the last coming in 2019.

       Coach Horn's overall record as a head football coach in thirty-three season stands at 332-93 (78.1%). His 332 wins rank 2nd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Horn's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of thirty times and won sixteen region championships. He has a 74-22 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Horn won six state championships prior to arriving at Central, the last coming in 2005 at Clay County.

       The Central Volunteers will play in Class 5A region four during the 2022 season.

       Central enters the 2022 season with a string of 10 consecutive wins on their home field at Volunteer Stadium.

       The Volunteers should be considered one of the favorites for the region four championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

       The Volunteers open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Benjamin Russell on Friday, August 26 at Volunteer Stadium. Last year the Benjamin Russell Wildcats finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 6A region three. The Wildcats ended last season on a positive note with a win over Sylacauga by a score of 35-28 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Central and Benjamin Russell have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Volunteers have a 5-5-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2021 with Central winning by a score of 35-26.
